Background |
I am preparing this report as a part of fulfilling the requirements of my course “Legal Environment of Business” instructed by Professor Iqbal Ahmad, Course Instructor, IBA.
Ship Breaking Industries (SBI) along the coast of Chittagong (Faujdarhat to Kumira) has become a paramount importance in the macro- and micro –economic contex of proverty-stricken Bangladesh. SBI present both challenge and opportunity for coastal zone management in holistic manner.
There are various hazards related to employment in Ship Breaking Industries. A number of fatal accidents occurred in the past apparently due to poor safety measures and working conditions. The Ship Breakers Associations are strong and influential and exploit the workers. In my report I will identify the enforcement of Bangladesh Labor Code 2006 in relation to safety and worker welfare measures in various Ship Breaking Enterprises in Chittagong. My report will also cover working hours briefly, since this affects the workers health.
Objective |
The purpose of this report is to study enforcement of Bangladesh Labor Code 2006 in the Ship Breaking Enterprises in Chittagong. My focus will be to study and gather information related to:
· Numbers and causes of accidents in the ship breaking enterprises in the past.
· The steps taken to ensure safety of the ship breaking employees
· Welfare measures for the workers
· Analysis of socio–economic information
· The role of the Ship Breaking Association
Methodology |
- Make a tour of some of the Ship Breaking Industries in Chittagong
- Gather data through questionnaires and interviews from employees
- Gather data on past accidents from secondary sources
- Interview chief personnel of the Bangladesh Ship Breaking Association
- Prepare report on the basis of the gathered information.
Time Line for Report Completion |
Report completion will require 7 business days. First 2 days will involve the actual interview process and Ship Breaking Industries(SBI) tour. Compilation and data processing will take up two days, and the final three days will go into the actual preparation of the report.
Resources |
The report can be prepared within a limited budget. Financial resources are required for conveyance, telephone calls, papers and printing. In addition, a PC with relevant Microsoft word and Internet access, a digital camera, and a Flash drive voice recorder for convenient storage and transfer of data and voice recording are required.
Limitations and Scope |
The concerned authorities may be reluctant in revealing genuine information. It may not therefore be possible to access and acquire certain information.
Conclusion |
I believe that the preparation of this report will be a very useful exercise, allowing us to develop a practical understanding of application of labor laws in Bangladesh. The exercise can be carried out with minimal resources, while the benefit derived will far outweigh the costs.
